# URL Split Testing

Test multiple landing page variations simultaneously to discover which performs best.

## Overview

Dalton's URL Split Testing allows you to compare different page designs, layouts, or messaging approaches by directing traffic across multiple URLs. Unlike traditional A/B testing that's limited to two variants, you can test as many page versions as needed to find your winner.
It's perfect to run tests on larger redesigns.

## How It Works

1. **Add Your URLs**: Include all the page variations you want to test (2, 3, 5, or more)
2. **Choose Traffic Distribution**: Select how visitors are allocated across your variants
3. **Monitor Performance**: Track conversion rates and engagement metrics for each URL
4. **Easy Integration**: No need to install additional code. If the Dalton snippet is installed on your website, split tests are supported.

## Traffic Optimization Modes

Choose how traffic is distributed across your URL variants:

### Fixed Split
Equal traffic distribution across all variants throughout the test.
- **Best for**: Statistical accuracy when you need equal sample sizes
- **Example**: 4 URLs each receive exactly 25% of traffic

### Smart Optimization
Gradually shifts more traffic toward better-performing variants over time.
- **Best for**: Balancing learning with conversion optimization
- **Behavior**: Monitors performance and incrementally increases traffic to winners while still collecting data from all variants

### Aggressive Optimization
Rapidly allocates most traffic to the top-performing variant.
- **Best for**: Maximizing conversions during the test period
- **Behavior**: Quickly identifies and prioritizes winning variants, minimizing traffic to underperformers

::: tip Choosing the Right Mode
Start with **Smart Optimization** for most tests—it balances statistical validity with business results. Use **Fixed** when you need rigorous testing data, and **Aggressive** when opportunity cost is high.

## Setting Up a URL Split Test

1. Navigate to **Split Tests** in your Dalton dashboard
2. Click **"Create URL Split Test"**
3. Add your URLs (minimum 2, no maximum limit)
4. Select your traffic optimization mode
5. Set your primary conversion goal
6. Launch your test

## Best Practices

**Test Meaningful Differences**: Ensure your URL variants have substantial differences worth testing—don't split test minor tweaks.

**Define Success Metrics**: Set clear conversion goals before launching to evaluate performance accurately.

**Allow Sufficient Time**: Even with smart optimization, give tests enough time to gather meaningful data (typically 1-2 weeks minimum).

**Monitor Early Results**: Check performance after the first few days to catch any technical issues or major problems.
